Another Perspective
Experiencing the ensemble from the foundation up.
Although trumpet has been my primary performance instrument, electric bass has become another important part of my musical life. It offers a fundamentally different perspective on ensemble playing—connecting rhythm and harmony while supporting the musicians around me.
My bass work has included musical theater and pit orchestras, surf and classic rock, and Christian worship music. Each setting asks for something different, from following a fully notated theater book to locking into a groove or adapting to the needs of a live ensemble.

Theater & Pit Work
The part matters.
Musical theater has been a regular part of my bass playing since approximately 2010. Pit work combines several things I particularly enjoy: reading, ensemble awareness, stylistic flexibility, and the discipline of supporting what is happening on stage.
For a bass player, strong reading skills can make the difference between simply knowing the instrument and being able to step into an ensemble and do the job. Theater books may demand precise notation, rapid stylistic changes, careful attention to the conductor, and consistency across an entire production.
Popular Music
From the pit to the stage.
Bass has also given me the opportunity to work in musical settings far removed from the orchestra pit. My popular music experience has included surf and classic rock as well as contemporary Christian worship music.

Being a multi-instrumentalist brings another kind of flexibility to ensemble work. Depending on the production or musical setting, that can mean moving beyond a single instrumental role and approaching the score from the needs of the ensemble as a whole.
